Greg Van Alstyne is a systemic designer, educator, researcher, & futurist in Tkaronto (Toronto, Canada), where he teaches at OCAD University and directs Strategic Innovation Lab (sLab).
Working with image, sound, text, and ideas, Greg has formed and joined collaborative projects with peers and clients that seek to co-create experiences in learning, communication, foresight, and flourishing since the 1980s. Greg's research interests include the relationship between design and emergence in innovation ecosystems; the futures of digital media, augmentation, and symbiosis; media ecology; speculative design; social data literacy; and critical visualization. Among his research & innovation initiatives, Greg was co-founder of DesignJam.ca (OCE-ONE); and co-investigator for Digital Governance; the Urban Futures panel for Imagining Canada's Future (SSHRC); Economic Futures for Ontario 2032 (OPS); and 2020 Media Futures (OMDC). Prior to his OCAD appointments, Greg held senior media, design and education roles including founder, Department of New Media at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and inaugural director of the alternative design school, Institute without Boundaries (IwB).
Systems Thinking Ontario is an group centered mostly in Toronto. Meetings (originally in-person, going online during the pandemic, and returning as mixed ever since) for 11 months of each year since 2012.
Much of the activity has been through the support of Graduate Studies at OCADU in downtown Toronto. Affiliates, friends and original sponsors involved faculty and students at University of Toronto and York University.
