Technologists for Democracy: Keeping Tech Companies and Government Accountable to the People
"Technology is an essential part of our lives. But sometimes tech actively works against the public's best interests for a healthy democracy. This is what we've been doing to fix that."
Speaker: Khasir Hean
Khasir is a machine learning engineer and local activist based in Toronto.
Technologists for Democracy:
"We are a diverse group of Canadians who want to spur positive technological change for social good. We want governments and tech companies to care about the people who use their products and the people they affect, beyond maximizing revenue and market share.
We want to counter the prevailing voices in tech who care primarily about the latest trends and coolest new gadgets. We give a voice to the tech workers who don’t want to be tech bros. We are a space for technologists with a conscience."
Agenda:
7:00-7:20 Welcome and Introductions
7:20-7:50 Presentation and Q&A/discussion
7:50-9:00 Breakout groups
Code of Conduct:

About Us:
Our weekly civic tech hacknights bring together Torontonians (designers, coders, urban planners, government staff, mappers, policy-makers, students, communications strategists, community organizers, and more) who share an interest in making Toronto more responsive, prosperous, sustainable, and equitable through design, tech, and data.
Come and be part of it!
