The 1-Hour Halloween RPG Challenge

Objective: Your objective is to build an RPG-style game with a spooky Halloween theme. For the tone and style, think King's Quest meets The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Core Constraint: You must build your entire project using only the Vibes.DIY platform.

Rules & Timeline:

  • Time Limit: You will have exactly 90 minutes to build your project.
  • Platform: Only Vibes DIY may be used. No other tools, code, or outside assets are permitted.
  • Originality: All creations must be built from scratch within the 1-hour time block.
  • Submission: At the end of the hour, your project must be saved and ready on the Vibes DIY platform.
  • Judging: After the time is up, judges will review all completed games to select a winner. In order to be eligible participants must have a profile setup on the torc.dev platform and be in our discord (profile link will need to be submitted.)

Event Structure (90 min total):

Your quest is to build a mini RPG game in just over an hour. Each round represents a new chapter in your game's creation!

The Quest Briefing (10 min)

  • Welcome, Adventurers! - Introductions and a toast to the quest ahead.
  • The Rules of the Realm - Explaining the challenge and how to win.
  • Rallying the Party - Discord setup and ensuring all heroes are connected.
  • Gazing into the Crystal Ball - A quick preview of the 5 stages of our quest.

The 5 Trials of Gamecraft (60 min) - You must have a link for each trial at the end. You can always go back to a previous trial if you finish the current one early!

  • Trial 1 (10 min): "The Hero's Welcome" - Create the starting screen or opening scene for your game. Introduce your protagonist or the main quest!
  • Trial 2 (10 min): "The First Encounter" - Design a simple interaction. This could be the first character your hero meets, a riddle from a spooky tree, or a puzzle to unlock a door.
  • Trial 3 (10 min): “The Cursed Artifact” - Create the central item of your quest. Generate or design the look of the "Pumpkin Crown," the "Ghostly Key," or whatever MacGuffin your hero is searching for.
  • An Interlude with the Oracle (10 min) - We pause our quest to receive wisdom from a mystical guide, the Oracle Claude, who can aid your creative journey.
  • Trial 4 (20 min): "Mapping the Realm" - Build the main world or level of your game. This is the largest trial, where you design the spooky forest, the haunted castle, or the town square your hero will explore.
  • Trial 5 (10 min): "The Final Confrontation” - Design the end of your game. This could be the treasure room, the final dialogue with the villain, or the "Quest Complete!" screen.

The Hero's Showcase (20 min)

  • Recounting the Tale - Adventurers will present their finished games to the group via Discord.
  • The People's Acclaim - The community casts its votes for their favorite adventure via Discord reactions.
  • The Royal Court Deliberates - Our judges make their final decision.
  • Awarding the Spoils - Announcing the winners of the awards, followed by a final celebratory wrap-up!
